Jigsaw Technique

will explain about one of the learning models, it is about the cooperative learning, especially Jigsaw technique. According to Sugianto (2010:45), Jigsaw was developed and experimented by Elliot Arronson and his co-partners at Texas University. Then it was adapted by Slavin and his co-partners at John Hopkins University.

Base on what i was reading, i think that jigsaw is one of the type of cooperative models that pushes the students to be active and help each other in mastering the material of learning. Wina Sanjaya (2006) in his book the strategy of learning explain some assumptions that students as the subject of education. They are:

  1. The students are human that is in development stage.
  2. Every person has different ability.
  3. Protege is basically a human being active, creative, and dynamic in the face environment.
  4. Proteges have motivation to fill their needs.

These assumptions portrait that the child is not an object to be packed with information, but they are subjects which have the potential and the learning process to develop potential. In the jigsaw technique, the students will learn in a small group which consist of several members like 4-6 of heterogeneous students. The group is responsible to their material given by the teacher and be able to teach/explain it to the other members of the group (Sudrajat, 2008:1) ” jigsaw is a type of cooperative learning that consist of some members in a group that responsible to mastering their material and teach it to their other member in their group”. With Jigsaw, the students can increase their responsibilities toward their material . The students do not only study what the teacher gives, but they also have to be ready to teach that material to their other group’s members, with that way, the students will be dependent on one another to learn their materials, ” the students dependent on one another must work cooperatively to learn the material” (Lie, A., 1994). Trough Jigsaw, Each member of the groups can contribute the information, ideas, opinion, ability and skill that he has, so together all members can increase their understanding each other and sharing what they know, so, i think that Jigsaw is an easy and fun type of cooperative learning models to be applied ” jigsaw is one of the methods of cooperative that is most flexible” (Slavin, 2005:246). The advantage of the Jigsaw strategy is to makes all of the students are involved in the learning process.Here, Every student of each group whom holds the same material will meet in a new group called expert group, each expert group must be responsible toward their materials. After the expert group learned a topic that was given by the teacher, all members back to their own origin group to teach the materials to their friends in the group. . “An advantage of the Jigsaw strategy is to makes all of the students are involved in the learning process at once teach it to others”(Zaini, 2008:56).
